Today’s post is a slight deviation from the rest. When the mask mandate first started, I thought I couldn’t wait until the day until the mandate was lifted. This is even after being exposed early to mask culture. Right out of college I moved to Japan where it is used widely and encouraged when you are not feeling well. And then, last year everything got really serious. My mom switched care homes in the middle of the pandemic. Looking back, this was probably not the best move. But prior to the pandemic, her doctor had recommended that she move to a smaller facility and one that was more memory-focused.
We moved her and she got Covid almost immediately. Although technically she recovered and didn’t technically die from Covid, the hospice nurses said that her Alzheimer’s was already to the point that adding Covid was too much for her body to take. Because of Covid, her facility was almost always on quarantine and not open to visitors. When the nurses would go in her room, not only were they new to her, but they were in full protective gear, face masks and shields and I’m sure with her Alzheimer’s she was confused and wasn’t able to understand where she was and who anyone was.
Now, I’m living in Arizona which was one of the states to lift the mask mandate early and also open up vaccines to 16 and up very early. I’m fully vaccinated. Yet, I still choose to wear a mask most places as it just doesn’t feel right to not wear a mask just yet. I’m about the only one who goes in/out of my spin class wearing a mask. The number at the grocery store is getting fewer and fewer. I walked into an in-person event for my industry event, the first this year, with a mask last week and I was the only one wearing a mask.
I’m more curious than anything. How are you all doing with masks? Glad to be mask-free? Still using them?
