There are so many things that need to be done when a loved one passes, but there are some things that may not be so obvious. First, run a credit report for them as soon as you can, while these agencies have not received the word that they have been declared deceased just yet. With this report, you can look at all the outstanding accounts and see exactly what is going on under their name. If anything is owed, or looks odd, you can follow up accordingly and close these accounts.
Next you will want to contact one of the three big credit agencies (I used TransUnion) to inform them of the death so that it will one, notify them of the death and two, if any activities start happening under the deceased’s name, they will know that something suspicious is happening.
What you will need to do is send a letter along with a copy of the death certificate and power of attorney and send it via certified mail.
I have a sample copy of the letter HERE, so all you need to do is format it for your own purposes and put in the necessary names and whatnot. If you are doing this, I’m so sorry, I know this isn’t easy, but know that these steps are necessary.
